Youth literature for  novembER

In this month's addition to our media library, we're focusing on children's books. Fun for all ages, these wonderfully illustrated books are an entertaining and easy way to learn vocabulary, or to get your family involved in your love of French! Originally for children and young teens, they can be divided into several categories:

  • The series  Mes premières découvertes by Galimard jeunesse: These illustrated books contain simple texts and vividly-coloured images. Equiped with coloured transparencies, these books are ideal for younger children. Four titles available:
    • L'automobile (Cars)
    • Le temps (The Weather)
    • L'hôpital (The Hospital)
    • La petite encyclopédie des animaux de la ferme (The little encyclopedia of farm animals)
  • Fables and Stories: Suitible for all ages, these books retell some of the most famous stories:
    • Charles Perrault : Contes de ma mère l'Oye (Mother Goose Stories). Written for young Teens. Includes  "Little Red Riding Hood", "Sleeping Beauty" and "Cinderella", amongst others.
    • Les plus belles histoires du soir (Bedtime tales). New short stories, organised by category and type, this collection for children is beautifully illustrated, and represents a great cultural diversity.
    • Fables de La Fontaine (Aesop's Fables). Written in verse, these famous fables about animals always end with a moral. Includes "The Cricket and the Ant", "The Fox and the Crow", "The Tortoise and the Hare", and "The wolf and the Sheep", amongst others.
    • Pierre et le Loup (Peter and the Wolf). Read by Gérard Philipe, this book also contains a CD with the recording of the piece by Sergei Prokofiev.
  • Comics: Though conceived for young teen girls, these funny and moving stories are also accessible to a wider audience:
    • Mélusine. The hilarious adventures of a teenaged witch living in a haunted castle.
    • Les carnets de Cerise: Le Zoo petrifié. A young girl, an aspiring novellist, finds a mysterious man in the woods, and launches an investigation.
