One test for every level. The preferred test for Permanent Residency and Canadian Citizenship applications.
The TEF (Test d’Évaluation de Français) exam is a single test for all levels. The candidate receives an international certificate corresponding to his or her exact level in the 6 level-range of the Common European Framework of Reference of Languages (CEFRL). This exam is a comprehensive placement test for native and non-native French speakers seeking a quick and precise evaluation of their general language skills. It is valid for a limited period of time.
Note that the TEF is taken in person, at our location in Winnipeg; the components other than oral expression are on computer.
We offer two versions of the TEF: TEF Canada and the general TEF. Most candidates will want to take the TEF Canada. You should only take the general TEF if it is specifically required, or if you need the Lexique & Structure section. If you are applying for Permanent residency or Canadian Citizenship, you MUST take the TEF Canada.
TEF Canada contains four fully-modular sections which evaluate written comprehension (reading), oral comprehension (listening), written expression (writing), and oral expression (speaking), respectively. In addition to the CEFRL score, you will also be placed on a 7-level scale based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).
The general TEF includes a mandatory section and two optional sections. The mandatory section evaluates written and oral comprehension (reading and listening), as well as vocabulary and structure. The vocabulary and structure (Lexique et structure) section is the only part of the general TEF not included in the TEF Canada. The first optional section evaluates written expression (writing), while the second evaluates oral expression (speaking).
