Put your French culture skills to the test and stand a chance to win an extraordinary journey to France! The Inter-Alliances Challenge unites Alliance Française chapters from around the world in a dynamic and friendly contest. DEFI is a general knowledge quiz celebrating the richness of French and Francophone cultures. You’ll first compete with fellow learners within your local Alliance, then advance to face participants from across Canada—including Manitoba, Calgary, Halifax, Edmonton, Moncton, Montréal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver. The excitement doesn’t stop there: the top contenders move on to the international stage, joining nearly 300 Alliances worldwide in a global celebration of language, culture, and connection.

What’s the process?

The DEFI Inter-Alliances is divided into 4 steps:

Step 1: a local selection within your Alliance to choose our best participants with a quiz of 20 questions.

Step 2: a national selection. The best 2 of each local selection will then challenge themselves in a 25-question quiz.

Step 3: a geographical zone (Canada, the Caribbean, USA for us) semi-final. Our best 2 contestants of the national selection will then represent Canada in the geographical semi-final.

Step 4: the international final. Every winner of the geographical zone semi-final (6 in total) will meet in person for the 2026 final!

Steps 2 and 3 are held online, via Zoom and through the digital platform Kahoot to answer the questions. Consequently, you will need 2 digital devices (we recommend using a laptop/tablet and a smartphone).

As for the international final, you will meet with the other international winners to compete in person in France.

What are the dates?

• The local selection, in winnipeg , will take place on Friday , March 20 at 6:00pm.

• Our Canadian selection will be held on Saturday, April 11 at 1:00pm. Our winning representative will be given within the following week.
  
• The semi-final will be on Saturday, May 23 , time is to be confirmed.

• The international final will take place in Brussels, Belgium, in July 2026.

Who can join the DEFI Inter-Alliances 2026?

To partake in the competition, you need to be a student from a participating Alliance and at least 18 years old.

Contestants need to be in an A2 (and beyond) class.

French natives are not allowed to take part in the DEFI.
