 Jean-Pierre Melville, one of the greatest French filmmaker, was born 101 years ago. As an homage, the Alliance Française du Manitoba and the Winnipeg Cinemathèque will screen a retrospective of a dozen of his best movies. Many of his artworks have gone into the Hall of Fame of cinema: Le Samouraï, Army of Shadows, Le Cercle Rouge. Melville has done 13 movies in total, filled with gangsters and dark politicians. He has always been associated with the neo-noir movement, but he explored many other genres, like surrealism. His unique style and his huge artwork is to be rediscovered through this retrospective!

This retrospective will take place from January 10th to February 20th, in partnership with Winnipeg Cinémathèque. More details coming soon. …

DEMISTIFY THEATRE PROFESSIONS

As part of the Théâtre Cercle Molière's pop-ups, come watch the capture of the play Dehors, from Gilles Poulin-Denis, played at the Cercle Molière during the 2017-2018 season, and discover the processes of the theatrical creation.
The projection will be followed by a session of questions and answers from Les Productions Rivard and the directeur Gabriel Tougas.
This workshop is part of Cercle Molière's pop-ups serie, and is perfect for all the curiouses willing to know more about what's behind the scenes.

In the mood for Melville is a documentary about the famous French filmmaker.  
Jean-Pierre Melville, his 14 movies and his 25 years-long career is an international legend.
His artwork, filled with dark atmospheres, is pretty unique and has made him one of the leader of the neo-noir movement.
His influence has reached Asia, and some of the most renowned filmmakers there testify to depict the impact he has had on their art.

The movie will take place at the Alliance, on 934 Corydon. Entrance is free and open to all. …

This award-wining adaptation of King Ubu has garnered much praise – the objects' raw form and the performance's frenetic pace are perfectly suited for Jarry's cruel farce. Since its creation, Ubu has been performed over 850 times in Québec, Mexico, Brazil and Europe! Two armies of French baguettes face each other in a stand-off as tomato bombs explode, an egg beater hovers over fleeing troops and molasses-blood splatters on fork-soldiers as they charge Père Ubu. Anything goes as Poland's fate is sealed on a tabletop! Multiple film references spice things up as two performers hammer-out a small-scale fresco of grandiose buffoonery.

Where do the images of the First World War that haunt our imagination come from ? To actually visualize the Great War, rather than just hearing about it, to portray it and bring it to life again : that is what today’s comic books capable of. By delving into archives and historical accounts, the comic book illustrators in this film take us back in time. They bring the First World War to life in our imagination : their drawings are more than just strokes of a pen. These major artists have made the Great War the main subject of their graphic narratives. In their company, we will try to trace the fragmented memory of 1914 – 1918 as a comic book chronicle. This film is in French with English subtitles and is being shown in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Slimane Zeghidour is a writer and journalist. Born in Kabylie in 1953, he grew up in Erraguene, a regroupment camp, and learned to read and write with young French people. He moved to Paris in 1974 and began as an illustrator for Libération and Pilote before embarking on a career as a writer and reporter (Le Monde, Le Nouvel Observateur, Géo, Télérama, El País, La Vie). He is the chief editor at TV5 Monde. He is the author of La Vie quotidienne à La Mecque (Hachette, 1989) which received the Clio Prize for History, Le Voile et la bannière (Hachette, 1990), L’Algérie en couleurs with Tramor Quemeneur (Les Arènes, 2011). The discussionw will be followed by a panel organized in collaboration with Accueil Francophone and Réseau Immigration Francophone. This will take place at the Maison des Artistes Visuels Francophones, on 219 Provencher. Free. …

To celebrate the start of the new school year, l'Alliance invites you to its first Kids' Movie Night! "A Cat in Paris" is an Oscar-nominated cartoon that tells the story of Dino, a cat who lives his life between two houses. By day, he lives with Zoé, the daughter of the police chief. By night he scales the roofs of Paris with Nico, a skilled burglar. Meanwhile at the police station, Zoé's mom needs to stop a jewel thief and keep her eyes on a piece of art coveted by the criminal Costa. The movie is rated PG but does have some moments that might be sad or scary, so it is recommended for kids over five. It is in French with English subtitles. Perret is a virtuoso jazz saxophonist, keyboard player, and composer from Annecy, France. After recording two excellent albums with his group Electric Epic, French saxophonist Guillaume Perret went solo with Free in 2016: with funky grooves and abstract harmonies, impressions of a retro-futurist Africa and post-psychedelic U-turns, it’s a fusion of all forms of jazz, where all influences collide. One of France's biggest comedy stars, Gad Elmaleh, is coming to Winnipeg with his new show Oh My Gad. Gad Elmaleh is arguably the biggest and most loved comedic star in France. Often referred to as the Seinfeld of France, Gad made history when he was the first to sell out the prestigious Olympia in Paris for 7 consecutive weeks. In North America, Gad has made guest appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Comedy Central's The Daily Show and was featured on Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Born to an American father and an Icelandic mother, Anspach spent most of her life living and working in France. Anspach died after a long battle with breast cancer on 7 August 2015 at the age of 54

Samir, a lanky forty-year-old crane operator in Montreuil, on the outskirts of Paris, falls madly in love with Agathe. As she is a swimming coach at the local pool, he decides to take lessons with her, even though he is a perfect swimmer. Screened in French with English subtitles. …
