La Douleur

The last war, Marguerite Duras experienced it both as a woman whose husband had been deported, as a member of the resistance, but also as a writer. In 1944, she created the newspaper Libres, which was to be the only newspaper to make lists of names, prisoners and deportees. Lucid, surprised, sometimes desperate, she kept a diary during these years, wrote texts that inspired her with everything she saw, what she lived, the people she met or confronted. These are the stories and excerpts of his diary, which Marguerite Duras has brought together under the title La Douleur.

In French, subtitled in English.

Facing the fireplace, the phone is next to me. On the right, the living room door and the corridor. At the end of the corridor, the door of entry. He could come right back, he'd ring the doorbell, "Who's there.—It's me." He could also call as soon as his arrival in a transit center: “I came back, I am at the Lutetia hotel for the formalities. “There would be no signs forerunners. He would call. It would happen. These are things that are possible. He comes back anyway. It is not a particular case. There is no particular reason for him not to return. There is no reason for him to come back.
